Campaign Name: "Slow Down. It Won't Kill You"
Description: To help reduce the 90 deaths that occurred on Georgia roads in 1999, the GDOT initiated a program in 2000 that focused on changing unsafe motorist behavior. The program used a variety of tools to educate the pubic about hazardous work zone driving conditions and the warnings implicit in the orange barrels, cones and signs.
Themes: Campaign messages to motorists included: "Slow Down, It Won¿t Kill You," and "Slow Down, My Daddy Works Here."
Audio PSAS: The statewide radio campaign began in May 2000.

Notes: For questions about the program, contact Lillian Jackson at (404) 463-6451.| Public and private transportation professionals and news media outlets were recognized for their commitment to safety at the American Road & Transportation Builders Association and National Safety Council inaugural "Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness Awards" banquet. The awards were presented May 11, 2001 at the International Roadway Work Zone Safety Conference, held in St. Louis, Mo. The awards competition recognizes specific programs, education campaigns, news stories or article series that demonstrate excellence in promoting safety in roadway construction zones. Georgia DOT's "Slow Down. It Won't Kill You" program was awarded First Place at State Level.
