National Work Zone Awareness Week- Slow for the Cone Zone
Each April we gather together for National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) to remember victims and to raise awareness of safety precautions for workers and motorists in work zones. This year’s national event was held April 8 in Sacramento California on the west steps of the Capital. More
The National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is represented on the Executive Planning Committee via the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). The Clearinghouse contributed nearly $12,000 to the event as a primary sponsor.
The Clearinghouse also shipped thousands support materials at no cost to be used for awareness campaigns across the United States. At home in Washington D.C., the Clearinghouse displayed orange candles in its windows and hung a work zone awareness ribbon flag.
A special section of the Clearinghouse website is dedicated to showcasing past and current work zone awareness campaigns from state DOT's and other organizations. If you have event information or photos to share please email Lisa McCluskey.
Services and Users Surge at the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse
In October 2007, the Clearinghouse underwent a major transformation—from the launch of a new, state-of-the-art Web site to sponsorship of a widely successfully National Traffic Management & Work Zone Safety Conference, the Clearinghouse was “reborn” to provide new services and information in the much needed area of roadway work zone safety. Meet the Clearinghouse Staff- Omar Lopez
The transportation construction industry boasts a workforce that is over 30 percent Hispanic, creating the need for qualified bilingual instructors. Omar Lopez joined ARTBA and the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse in March 2007 to help serve that need. More

Laws and Regulations
MUTCD Notice of Proposed Amendment (NPA), comments must be received on or before July 31, 2008.
Highway Safety Improvement Program, Notice of Proposed Amendment, comments must be received on or before June 23, 2008.
Cranes and Derricks. A notice of proposed rulemaking is scheduled for August 2008.
Confined Spaces in Construction, Proposed rule; Notice of Hearing. OSHA is convening an informal public hearing in Washington, DC beginning July 22, 2008.

share messages about various safety issues. A daily digest option
and archives are also now available.
